In response to ministerial directives, the Continuing Education Unit at the College of Industrial Management for Oil and Gas organized a workshop to reduce illegal immigration, entitled "The Phenomenon of Illegal Immigration: Its Causes and Methods of Combating It." The workshop was held on Wednesday morning, May 6, 2026, under the patronage of the President of Basra University for Oil and Gas, Professor Dr. Mohammed Hilal Hafez Al-Kaabi, and under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Industrial Management for Oil and Gas, Professor Dr. Sami Obaid Mohammed Al-Tamimi. The workshop was presented by the Administrative Assistant of the College of Industrial Management for Oil and Gas, Dr. Haider Ali Karim Al-Asadi, and Assistant Lecturer Hazem Eidan Salem. They began by discussing the concept of illegal immigration, its methods and means, and the most prominent harms suffered by illegal immigrants. They emphasized that Iraq has recently become a safe environment with numerous job opportunities for young people seeking employment. Therefore, the situation in Iraq is much better than in other countries, and all citizens should contribute to building the country's institutions and not emigrate to an uncertain future. The path of illegal migration is fraught with danger and often ends with the deaths of hundreds of migrants, not to mention the deportation orders issued by European countries against refugees, which negatively impact the psychological and social well-being of young people who migrate illegally. Al-Asadi pointed out that among the negative aspects of illegal migration are the risk of injury or death, especially drowning, and the loss of significant sums of money spent on attempting illegal migration. Many individuals also fall victim to scams during illegal migration, and migrants may face arrest, imprisonment, and deportation. At the end of the workshop, attendees were given the opportunity to share their comments and observations, which collectively emphasized the importance of raising awareness among all young people about the dangers of taking the path of illegal migration.
