The Impact of Climate on Sports Activities in Basra Governorate

Two lecturers from the College of Industrial Management for Oil and Gas, Asst. M. Haider Sadiq and Asst. M. Abbas Zaki, published an important study in the Arabian Gulf Journal (Issue 2, Vol. 53, June 2025) entitled "The Impact of Climate on Sports Activities in Basra Governorate." The study aims to analyze the impact of climatic characteristics in Basra on sports activities, in addition to assessing the extent to which these characteristics affect spectator comfort and the efficiency of outdoor sports facilities. The analysis was based on microclimatic cycle data for the period between 1991 and 2002. The main results, based on the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI), revealed a classification of climatic periods as follows: Heat stress (warm): includes the months of May, September, and October; Moderate and comfortable period: extends from November to April; and Extremely hot and extreme period: the summer months (June, July, and August) record very high values, making sports activities extremely difficult. The Wet Bulb Temperature (WBGT) index provides important recommendations for exercise: Limit exercise: It is necessary for people who are not acclimatized to the heat during the months of April, May, and October. Suitable period: The winter months (December, January, and February) are ideal for exercise. Caution during the transitional months: November and March require caution due to the possibility of sudden temperature increases. Stop exercise: Exercise should be completely stopped during the summer months (June, July, and August) for the safety of the players.
