Department of Oil and Gas Management and Marketing at College of Industrial Management for Oil and Gas organized a scientific symposium on the phenomenon of global warming and its environmental impacts on Basra Governorate on Tuesday, 20/8/2024, under the patronage of the President of Basra University for Oil and Gas, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Al-Kaabi, and under the supervision and attendance of the Dean of the College of Industrial Management for Oil and Gas, Prof. Dr. Sami Al-Tamimi, and the assistant lecturer Haider S. Kazim lectured in it. The researcher reviewed the concept of global warming and the causes leading to the exacerbation of the phenomenon, including the natural (geological situation of Basra Governorate and the location of the circles) as well as the human (gas emissions and desertification represented by one of its manifestations, which is the decrease in vegetation cover in terms of quantity and type). The researcher also showed the digital data for the maximum temperatures (recorded during the afternoon) for different climate cycles from 1960 to 2022, and explained the amount of change that occurred and the reasons for that change and its repercussions on the ecosystems and what the systems contain of living plant and animal organisms, in addition to its repercussions on humans, and among the recommendations that the researcher referred to the globally approved technology in extracting and capturing carbon dioxide to sequester carbon dioxide from the polluted source or directly from the atmosphere and then converting it to a liquid state and transporting it through pipes and storing it in depleted oil wells or in the seabed. In addition to expanding the cultivation of perennial trees because they are a natural reservoir for carbon dioxide gas. The symposium witnessed discussions and scientific interventions from the attendees.
