Center for Bayan for Studies and Planning has published a scientific publication titled "(Venezuelan Oil in Washington's Grasp: Will OPEC’s Power Decline and Will Iraq Be Affected?)" authored by Dr. Maytham Abdul-Hamid Al-Rawdan, a faculty member at the College of Industrial Management for Oil and Gas. The researcher explained in this publication that the global oil market is witnessing rapid transformations that transcend the traditional boundaries of supply and demand, intersecting with geopolitical and strategic considerations related to international influence, energy security, and the redistribution of economic power. In this context, Venezuela emerges as an exceptional case—not only because it possesses around 303 billion barrels of proven oil reserves, the largest in the world, but also due to its geographic proximity to the United States and its significant potential to reshape oil flows in global markets if it succeeds in restoring high production levels. The importance of Venezuelan developments grows with the rising discourse about direct U.S. involvement in developing the Venezuelan oil sector and opening access for American companies to numerous oil fields, alongside the prospect of Venezuela potentially exiting the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). This development raises questions that extend beyond Venezuela’s own future to touch upon OPEC's capability to maintain its cohesion and manage global supply, especially if Venezuela transforms into a major additional oil source outside the organization's quotas. The core problem lies in the potential coincidence of increased Venezuelan production with the return of additional quantities of Russian and Iranian oil, at a time when global oil demand growth projections differ between OPEC and the International Energy Agency (IEA). This poses a key question regarding the market's capacity to absorb the additional supply without triggering a significant drop in prices.Consequently, the publication examines OPEC's ability to handle this scenario, whether it will continue its production cut policies to sustain prices, or prioritize preserving its market share. It also raises questions about how particularly vulnerable Iraq is to these developments, given its high reliance on oil revenues, increasing public spending and debt, and its need to increase production to meet its financial obligations. To read the full publication:https://www.bayancenter.org/2026/09/16542/Media and Government Communication Division
