Challenges and prospects for transporting Iraqi oil by sea

The College of Industrial Management for Oil and Gas organized a scientific seminar this morning, Monday, April 20, 2026, entitled: "Challenges and Prospects of Maritime Oil Transportation in Iraq in Light of Geopolitical Transformations." The seminar featured presentations by two distinguished guests: Dr. Najm al-Din Abdullah al-Hajjaj, Head of Department at the Iraqi Ports Company, and Dr. Hussein Haider al-Jazaeri, Chief Engineer at the Iraqi Oil Tankers Company. The seminar was moderated by Dr. Adnan Hadi Jaaz, Head of the Department of Oil and Gas Economics, and was attended by the Dean of the College of Industrial Management for Oil and Gas, Professor Dr. Sami Obeid Muhammad al-Tamimi, as well as the heads of academic departments, esteemed professors, and students of the college. The first research paper indicated that the Iraqi economy relies primarily on crude oil exports. These exports are transported through Iraq's oil and commercial ports, passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Approximately 90% of Iraq's oil exports pass through the strait, making any disruption to oil exports a direct threat to economic stability. This is because the strait is one of the world's most important maritime chokepoints, through which roughly 20-50% of global oil trade passes. It is also the main outlet for Iraqi exports and imports via the Arabian Gulf. Therefore, studying the impact of the Strait of Hormuz on Iraqi oil exports and imports reveals that it leads to a significant decrease in the volume of Iraq's exports and imports, and even its revenues, as occurred in recent geopolitical crises that led to a decline in production. This decline, in turn, negatively impacted the country's economic development. The second research paper... It addressed the importance of maritime oil transport in Iraq, as it is the vital and economic corridor through which it overlooks global markets. Most quantities of crude oil, petroleum products, and condensates are exported through the southern ports via the Arabian Gulf, passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Therefore, the closure of the strait is a result of the Zionist-American war against the Islamic Republic. This has caused a significant economic downturn for Iraq, as foreign shipping companies are reluctant to enter the Arabian Gulf region to transport Iraqi oil due to the high risks of war and insurance costs. Therefore, Iraq must possess a national fleet specializing in transporting its oil and not rely on foreign companies, unlike other Arab oil-producing countries. For example, Saudi Arabia owns 81 tankers, 45 of which transport crude oil and 36 transport refined petroleum products and chemicals. Kuwait owns 33 tankers, 15 of which transport crude oil, 10 transport refined petroleum products, 5 transport gas, and 3 supply fuel. Iran owns 64 crude oil tankers, Oman owns 50, the UAE owns 35, and Algeria owns 15.In contrast, Iraq possesses only 6 small tankers with a combined capacity of no more than 750,000 barrels. The seminar was enriched by the interventions of the attendees, especially the intervention of the Dean of the College of Industrial Management for Oil and Gas, and the Director of the Petroleum Training Institute.
